Learn more with Fixed Wireless FAQ’s

What is Fixed Wireless Broadband?

  • Fixed Wireless Broadband is the use of radio signals to communicate between the tower (transmitter) and the base (receiver). The base is installed at your home or business and is connected to the user’s internal router. BrightRidge uses a licensed spectrum of 3.65 GHz frequency between the tower and the base.

How does BrightRidge Fixed Wireless work?

  • BrightRidge Broadband provides an internet connection via a wireless antenna system. An antenna is installed outside the premise with an attached radio receiver/transmitter. This antenna is pointed at a nearby tower and must be near line‐of‐sight (very few trees, no buildings or hills blocking the path). When you send and receive information over the internet, it goes over the wireless link from your radio/antenna to our Access Point. From there, it travels over a fiber connection to our network and out to the internet.
  • BrightRidge Fixed Wireless service has very low latency (or delay) compared to satellite internet, where signals must travel thousands of miles into space. BrightRidge’s Fixed Wireless broadband service will support high-speed internet, voice, and other uses such as VPN’s and gaming.

How is Fixed Wireless connected?

  • BrightRidge Broadband installers will professionally mount an antenna outside the premise and run an Ethernet line inside the location by drilling a small hole or following an existing entry point. The Ethernet line can then be plugged into your computer or connected to a router to enable a home network. BrightRidge also offers Managed WiFi services.

What is a site survey?

  • A site survey helps us determine if the signal distributed from our towers can be received at your location via good signal strength level. Scheduling a site survey with BrightRidge does not obligate you to purchase our services. Simply, a site survey helps determine if you have the necessary line-of-sight to get the fastest service possible.

If internet from other providers isn’t available at my location, can I get BrightRidge’s Fixed Wireless?

  • BrightRidge’s Fixed Wireless Broadband service does not utilize fiber, copper, or other physical cabling for its “last mile” (the part of a network that actually connects a customer to the larger service provider network) to reach the premise. This means we’re not limited by existing infrastructure. In addition, as a result of our extensive coverage area, BrightRidge can provide service where other providers can’t or don’t. Contact our Customer Service department, and we’ll be glad to assist you by calling (423) 952-5000.

What’s the difference between BrightRidge’s Fixed Wireless and traditional internet?

  • Utilizing wireless technologies, BrightRidge’s Fixed Wireless Broadband service can be used to service customers where a traditional service provider can’t or wouldn’t due to the need to run physical plant.

Is Fixed Wireless the same as WiFi?

  • No, our service may utilize some of the same frequencies used by WiFi, however the technologies used by our fixed wireless broadband products are optimized to provide higher speeds and a much more reliable service.

Are Fixed Wireless internet connections secure?

  • The technologies we have chosen to use in our network are highly secure. Furthermore, typical WiFi and consumer-grade wireless internet equipment are not capable of intercepting or receiving our fixed wireless signals directly.

Does weather affect your Fixed Wireless service?

  • Our Fixed Wireless service is very robust, and your service should remain stable even during most stormy weather (wind, rain, snow). Very heavy rains and snow may cause a some degradation of service, but this should only be temporary and only during extreme weather conditions.
